For being the fairer sex, the female of the human species has often found itself unfairly sidelined and given unequal opportunities. For centuries, a woman was to be seen and not heard, not daring to venture their opinions on dinner table conversations, never mind rule countries and offices of state. That has all changed though and in the 21st century women are ruling the roost.

They are now some of the most high profile people in this world, working at highly skilled, well paying jobs at the heads of companies and governments. One needs to only look around to see a collection of trailblazers that any woman would be proud to follow in the foot steps of these days. A woman would not have been considered suitable for half of the jobs that the fairer sex now takes up in modern life.

Even just fifty years ago, it would have been unimaginable that a woman - who are generally perceived to be weak and ineffectual - would be able to lead a nation. However, there are many of them who rule their nations with aplomb. Angela Merkel, for one, is the Chancellor of Germany and has proved a massively powerful leader when it comes to restructuring the Eurozone economies as the single European currency fails. She is now one of the most respected leaders in all of Europe.

In the United States of America, Hillary Rodham Clinton is the Secretary of State. She jets around the globe fighting geopolitical fires. Worldwide, she is perhaps better known than even the President himself because she is so regularly a visitor to foreign shores.

These two are not exceptions to the rule: they are indicative of the prevailing thoughts. Julia Gillard is Australia's well respected Prime Minister. South American nations have made females their leaders for years, and they have proved very effective.

They are at the top of big businesses as well. No longer is there a glass ceiling for those who may require maternity leave in the longer run. Gender equality legislation has redressed the balance worldwide. Some forward thinking countries including those in Scandinavia ensure half their boards are female.

The 21st century women are becoming major power brokers. This is inspiring for those who are perhaps less likely to rule this world, but can take heart from the fact that there are no longer limitations on what they can do. Being female is no longer a hindrance in life: it is a benefit.
