Everywhere we look, we are dealing with women being called sexy. Sexy movie stars. Sexy singers. Sexy models. The society is constantly throwing out the word sexy, but what does sexy really mean?

Sexy is a relative term - sexy is relative to the environment, to the occasion, to roles, and to the other people present in a situation. Imagine walking onto a college campus and looking at female professors and female students. Clearly, female students can wear clothing that female professors couldn't get away with wearing. If the student wore a midriff-baring top, they would be accepted, considered sexy, and probably admired. If the professor wore the same top, she would be considered as dressing inappropriately - as being too sexy. If the student wore skin tight jeans, a skimpy top or a deep cut neckline, she might be pushing the edge of acceptable, but she wouldn't be considered too sexy for the situation. If the teacher wore any of those things, she would be too sexy for her role. So sexy is "role" related and role defined. Sexy is definitely related to the environment and to the role people are playing - teacher or student, for example. Sexy is also relative to the occasion and the location. The same student and female teacher could both get away with more provocative clothing if they were at a dance club, rather than in a teaching environment. And the amount of "detectable" cleavage would, on average, increase substantially in this night life environment. So what is sexy and what is acceptable varies considerably based on the environment.

So, what are the elements of dress that are considered sexy? Think of a group of young women at a hot city club. What would they be wearing? Most likely, lots of deep plunging necklines, exposing plenty of you-know-what. Add in some tight jeans or a short skirt, some stilettos, and a dash of perfume, and the average female clubber will definitely be considered sexy by any observer. One of the elements of sexy is that the observers consider it sexy and appropriate. If one of these lovely females suddenly had her mother show up at the same club with the same clothing, the mother would most likely be thought trashy, overdone, or inappropriate. So, again, the role someone plays and the observers' expectations of people in that role play a big part in what is considered sexy.

What other elements make an outfit sexy? I looked at Yahoo answers where seven women answered the question, "What is the sexiest outfit you own? While one thought an expensive short black dress with her Manolo's won, others felt that it was any outfit that boosts their self-confidence. Several mentioned boots, leather mini skirts, stilettos, or dark, skinny jeans that boost their bums. If you asked a man what he considered sexy in a woman, he might mention visible body parts rather than the actual clothing.

"Sexy" is not only influenced by the environment and the role, it is also heavily influenced by the occasion. Parties are different from school events for your kids. Beach parties, for example, are a great place to show quite a bit of skin. But that is the extreme. Even a romantic dinner at a great restaurant is an opportunity for women to dress in a sexy manner: lower necklines, tighter clothes, a bit of skin showing in all the right places. On the other hand, if someone left that same dinner and drove to their son's little league game, they would now be too sexy for the occasion. Women are very attuned, even without consciously thinking about it, to the slight variations on what is appropriate for each occasion.

So, how does all this come together when women are getting dressed for a fantasy occasion such as Halloween? Women use this as a way of letting loose, of giving their imagination free reign, for acting as someone they might not feel comfortable acting like in their daily lives. A women might be defined as a mother, as a wife, as a teacher in their daily life. Those are roles and all roles have limitations and expectations. Women can get tired of those expectations. They can get tired of being what other people want them to be. They can be bored with being responsible, with being the soccer mom, with being Johnnie's Mom, with being the third grade teacher - they want to go back to their dreams of being a carefree, young, desirable women. With being sexy. With being fun. With being the opposite of responsible.

So what options do women have when they "just wanna have fun?" Halloween is the perfect outlet for women. It is a time when they can be whatever they have ever dreamed of being. They remember watching Pirates of the Caribbean and thinking how much fun it would be to be the saucy wench - well, on Halloween they can be the sexy Buccaneer wench. They can wear their high boots and saucy hat and give their fantasies free reign. For a few hours while they are at their favorite Halloween party or event, they can be Sexy Suzy - not Mom, not employee, not any constrained role. They can be fun. They can be flirtatious. They can show off their hard-earned figure obtained after endless hours in the gym. Halloween is a time they can be a Playboy character. They can wear super short clothing and it is accepted. Women love Halloween sexy clothing because it let's them be that sexy broad that lives within every woman.

So, as Halloween is around the corner, enjoy your sexy side and have fun in your sexy Halloween costume.
